What is multi-mapping?

For most tools, the majority of fields can be mapped with a single other field. A due date in Asana is mapped directly with the due date field in Jira. The member field in Trello is mapped with the assignee field in GitHub.

But some other fields go beyond this limit. These are multi-mappable fields. Usually, they’re fields with multiple, selectable options. Think of a status field that can be Open, In Progress, or Closed, or a label field with customizable selections.

You can thoroughly customize a multi-mappable field to suit your workspace. This is usually done in two steps:

  • Map the fields to each other: Say you have labels in Trello and tags in Asana. When it’s time to set up your field mappings, you’ll want to match them up.

  • Map each option: You can map a specific Trello label to a specific tag in Asana, map multiple labels to a single tag, and more. More on this in a minute.

How does it work?

You can work with multi-mappable fields when it’s time to customize your field mappings.

In this example flow between two Trello boards, you’ll see that a few field mappings have cogs next to them. These cogs identify multi-mappable fields.

Click on the cog to open the multi-mapping menu.

Unito will usually try to map your fields automatically — so a yellow label on both Trello boards will be automatically mapped to each other, for instance. If you don’t see the mapping you want, you can create a new one by clicking on the + Add more labels button.

But what makes multi-mappable fields special is that you can map multiple labels on one side to a single one on the other.

To do this, just make sure you have a pairing already set up, say between two yellow labels.

Then, click on the plus sign by one of the yellow labels. This will add a new dropdown, where you can select a new label. Say the green label.

And just like that, you’ve mapped two labels to one. Now, when you add a yellow or purple label to a Trello card in Test Board A.1, the matching Trello card in Key Deliverables Board will get a yellow label.

You can also do this with sections and lists. Learn more about that here.

Mappings with multiple fields on both sides

In the screenshot below, you'll see a mapping with multiple Trello labels on both sides of the flow.

In this example, every single label on the left side of the mapping — yellow, green, and red — will be mapped to the purple entry on the right. That means they'll all turn into a purple label when they're synced over. They aren't matched one to one.

The same is true of the reverse. All labels on the right side of the mapping — purple, blue, and orange — will become yellow labels when they're synced to the other board.

If you wanted to match a lable with a single other label (e.g. red to orange), you would need to remove them from this mapping and create a new mapping exclusively for these two labels.
