      What Are Rate Limits?

      Rate limits control the number of requests a network receives. Here's how this can affect your Unito workflows.

      What are rate limits?

      Each tool we integrate sets limits on how many requests a specific user can make in a given time. These are called "rate limits." When you come close to hitting these limits, the tool will delay your requests. Each time you sync a change with Unito, the tool we integrate counts this as a request. So if you're syncing multiple changes at once, you might be in danger of hitting a tool's rate limit, which can slow down the speed at which your data will sync.

      Here's a quick example of how this process works:

      Let's you're syncing a task from Asana, Unito automatically sends a request to Asana asking, 'Are there any new updates on this task?'

      The speed at which Unito syncs data to or from that Asana task will then depend on how quickly Asana's system (the API) can respond.

      If Asana's API is busy with other tasks or has a limit on how many requests it can handle at once, this could slow down the syncing process.

      How to know you've reached your rate limits

      If your changes aren't syncing as quickly as they're supposed to, you might be nearing your rate limits. Otherwise, you can always reach out to our product specialists to see if rate limits are impacting your flows. We'll be happy to check for you.

      How to avoid rate limits

      There are a few ways you can make sure your workflows don't hit the rate limits for your tools:

      • Space out your changes: If auto-sync is turned on for all your flows, you run a greater risk of hitting a tools rate limit. You can turn off auto-sync to manually trigger your flows at your convenience. Just go to your flow list, find the toggle to the left of each flow, and click on them if they're blue.

      • Create several bot users: Bot users don't just help prevent confusion when syncing comments. By spreading out requests over multiple bot users, you can avoid hitting your rate limits. Learn how to set up a bot user in this guide.

      • Limit the use of bulk edit add-ons: While convenient, these add-ons can guarantee that you regularly hit your rate limits. Try staggering your uses of these add-ons to prevent this from happening.
